Weymouth Beach

Weymouth Beach lies in Weymouth Bay beside the Dorset town of Weymouth. It forms a wide, gently curving arc of golden sand with shallow waters and small waves. The Esplanade runs along the back of the beach, linking the town to the shore. King George III first visited in 1789 after doctors advised sea bathing for his porphyria. He declared Weymouth his ‘first resort’ and helped make bathing fashionable. The beach has hosted the Weymouth Beach Motocross since 1984 and an annual volleyball tournament since 1983. The beach offers traditional seaside attractions during summer. Donkey rides, Punch and Judy shows and sand sculptures appear on the sand. Children can use trampolines or visit a small funfair, and pedaloes are available for hire. At the southern end stands Weymouth Pier, which includes the Pavilion Theatre and the Weymouth Sea Life Tower. The northeastern end leads to Greenhill, beyond which lie Furzy Cliff and Bowleaze Cove. Weymouth Beach was voted Number 1 in The Times and Sunday Times Best UK Beaches 2023. Its wide, gently sloping sands and calm waters remain popular with families and visitors. The Esplanade provides a promenade for strolling beside the shore. Traditional entertainments and seasonal events keep the beach lively throughout the summer.
