Grüner Kopf

The Grüner Kopf is a 3 005-metre peak in the Glockner range of East Tyrol. It sits inside the core zone of Hohe Tauern National Park, on the long ridge called the Lange Grat. The ridge runs from the Zollspitze in the north to the Kristallspitzl in the south. To the west lies the Rumesoikar, a small glacier-fed basin where the Rumesoibach begins. Eastwards the Teischnitzbach rises in broad alpine pastures. Climbers first reached the summit on 13 August 1927 by traversing the whole Lange Grat from north to south. The normal route starts at the Moaralm road in Kals valley and follows the Teischnitztal footpath. After the Pifanghütte the path ends and the climb continues cross-country to the Rumesoischarte col. From there the South Ridge leads to the top in easy scrambling. The same col also serves for a longer traverse of three neighbouring summits. Visitors who reach the col find open alpine terrain on every side. To the south the Kristallspitzl rises just above the skyline. To the north the Lange Grat stretches away towards the Zollspitze. The Teischnitztal drops steeply eastwards, while the Kalser Dorfertal lies below to the west. Two huts stand ready for walkers: the Kalser Tauernhaus in the Dorfertal and the Stüdlhütte high above the Teischnitzbach.
