Burg Ardey

The ruins of Burg Ardey stand on a wooded hillside above the Ruhr valley in Fröndenberg’s Ardey district. A few crumbling walls and ditches remain of the once formidable hilltop fortress. The site overlooks the railway cutting of the Fröndenberg–Unna line, which sliced through the southern defences in the 19th century. The castle was the stronghold of the Ardey family, first recorded in 1176 after their marriage to the heirs of the Rüdenbergs. Their lands passed to the Counts of Mark in 1296, and the monastery at nearby Fröndenberg later acquired parts of the estate. A wide ditch, 17 m across, once guarded the eastern approach, while a smaller building measuring 14 m by 10 m still shows walls nearly 1.3 m thick. Visitors walk among the remnants of the main tower and the vanished outer ward, where a medieval court once sat. Below, the Ruhr glints through the trees, and the railway cut marks the spot where the southern wall once stood. Local legend tells of a knight who buried his treasure in the castle well before fleeing, and of a nightly lantern that still hovers above the lost hoard.
