Prämonstratenserstift St. Georg

St. Georg was a Premonstratensian monastery in Stade, Lower Saxony, active from the 12th to the 16th century. It stood on a small hill in the western part of the medieval town, close to the lower Elbe and a few kilometres from its mouth into the North Sea. The monastery’s church once occupied the site now filled by the Zeughaus, a former arsenal. Beneath the Zeughaus cellar lies the only surviving and accessible remnant of the monastery: the crypt of Archbishop Gottfried von Arnstein. The foundation dates from between 1133 and 1137, when Count Rudolf II of Stade and his wife Richardis established a Premonstratensian convent. It became one of the order’s earliest houses in northern Germany, confirmed by the Archbishop of Bremen in 1137. The first canons likely came from Stift Gottesgnaden near Calbe on the Saale. By the early 13th century the monastery held patronage over every church and chapel in Stade, confirmed in 1232 and 1257, and owned extensive lands around the town. A Latin school is recorded from 1395, and its members came from as far as Utrecht. The monastery played a notable part in Stade’s Reformation, supplying the first two evangelical preachers, Johannes Osenbrügge in 1522 and Johannes Hollmann in 1523. Today visitors can see the Zeughaus cellar, where the archbishop’s grave was rediscovered during excavations in 1993. Earlier digs in 1961 had already uncovered parts of the cloister foundations. The first church, built in the 12th century, was a simple granite structure over sixty metres long. A larger brick basilica replaced it in the 14th century, reaching seventy-two metres and ranking as the second-largest church in the Archdiocese of Bremen after the cathedral. The site overlooks the old market square, a reminder of the monastery’s former prominence in the town’s life.
