Lincoln Bishop University

Lincoln Bishop University stands on a single-site campus in uphill Lincoln, a short walk from the historic Bailgate area, the Cathedral and Castle. The oldest buildings date from 1841 and are in a Tudor revival style of brick with stone dressings and gabled dormers. A plain extension range was added in 1861 at right angles to the road. In 1862 Sir Arthur Blomfield designed the simple chapel that stands between these buildings and the road. Recent years have seen many new developments and facilities across the campus. The university began in 1862 as a teacher training college for the Diocese of Lincoln. It was renamed Bishop Grosseteste College in 1962 after the 13th-century Bishop of Lincoln. In 2022 historian Tracy Borman became Chancellor and in 2025 the institution changed its name to Lincoln Bishop University. It now has around 2,300 full-time students on a variety of programmes. The university awards foundation degrees, BA and BSc degrees, PGCEs and doctorates. Visitors find the Newport frontage with its earliest building and chapel, the Cornerstone Building extension to the Sibthorp Library, and The Venue theatre with cinema equipment. The Robert Hardy Building houses the main reception, and Constance Stewart Hall provides teaching rooms. On-campus halls offer 293 places with free wi-fi and onsite security. The Students’ Union supports academic and pastoral needs and organises sports teams competing in BUCS leagues.
