Museum of Lincolnshire Life

The Museum of Lincolnshire Life stands in Lincoln, a city in the county of Lincolnshire. It occupies the Old Barracks on Burton Road, a building with its own history. The museum’s collection traces social life in Lincolnshire from 1750 to today. Exhibits cover trade, home life, farming, industry and local regiments. The Royal Lincolnshire Regiment and the Lincolnshire Yeomanry are represented through uniforms, weapons and documents. Among its displays is one of the first British tanks. Research showed the machine was called Daphne, not Flirt II as once thought. It served with the Tank Corps at Passchendaele in 1917. The museum also holds early farm machinery, including a Field Marshall tractor built in Gainsborough. Two Ruston-Bucyrus excavators from 1929 and 1937 stand in the yard. Re-created shops and house interiors show how people lived in past centuries. Outside, the windmill at Ellis’ Mill turns beside the museum. Inside, visitors walk past tanks, tractors and tools that tell Lincolnshire’s story. The exhibits explain how local firms shaped the county’s economy. Photographs, letters and diaries add personal detail to the history. The displays change as new research uncovers more about the past.
