A823(M) motorway

The A823(M) is a short motorway in Fife, Scotland. It runs for just over a mile from the M90 into Rosyth and links to the A823 towards Dunfermline. Built in 1964, it was meant to extend east along the Firth of Forth’s north coast. A bridge was constructed for this plan, but the route was never finished after the A92 was upgraded. Today the motorway carries fast traffic between Rosyth and Dunfermline, giving quick access to the Queensferry Crossing and the M90. There is a footbridge in the middle for people walking between the two towns. The road has no hard shoulder but has an emergency lay-by on each side near its centre. Surrounded by flat land in central Fife, the motorway is bordered by fields and light industry. The footbridge offers views across open ground to distant hills. Drivers see few buildings along the route, only occasional signs for Rosyth dockyard or Dunfermline’s outskirts.
