Filialkirche St. Blasius, Kleinwien

The Roman Catholic filial church of St Blasius stands on the slope of the Waxenberg above the village of Klein-Wien in Lower Austria. It belongs to the parish of Paudorf-Göttweig and is protected as a listed monument. A small cemetery surrounds the building, also under official protection. The church is worth visiting for its layered history. A Romanesque predecessor was replaced in the mid-15th century by the present Gothic nave. The 17th-century gallery and 18th-century Baroque lantern tower show later additions. Inside, the late-Gothic net-ribbed vault and medieval wall paintings survive alongside Baroque altarpieces and a 1733 pulpit. Visitors enter through a shoulder portal into the barrel-vaulted sacristy. The nave has a flat ceiling with a 1733 stucco mirror and a wide Gothic chancel arch. The high altar of the early 17th century carries a restored 1600 crucifixion scene. Side altars by Jakob Fritsch and paintings by Johann Samuel Hötzendorfer line the walls. The octagonal lantern tower above the chancel roof frames the bells.
