Göttweig Abbey

Visible from afar, the Benedictine Göttweig Abbey crowns a hill south of Krems overlooking the Wachau. Founded in 1083, it was rebuilt in monumental Baroque after a fire in 1718 and, for its setting and scale, is known as the "Austrian Montecassino".

Highlights include the Imperial Staircase with Paul Troger’s vast ceiling fresco, the abbey church and the sweeping view over the Danube valley. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage Wachau, the abbey is also renowned for its own wines.
