Holloway Road tube station

Holloway Road is a station on the Piccadilly line of the London Underground. It lies between Caledonian Road and Arsenal stations in the London Borough of Islington. The station opened in 1906 and was designed by Leslie Green in the Modern Style, also known as British Art Nouveau. Its distinctive red-tiled building is listed by English Heritage as Grade II. The station stands next to the site of the former Holloway and Caledonian Road railway station. The station is close to the Emirates Stadium, home of Arsenal football club. Plans to expand the station were abandoned when costs rose from £5 million to £60 million. On match days the station becomes exit only and eastbound trains do not stop. An experimental spiral escalator was built in the unused lift shaft but never used by the public. Remains of the escalator were excavated in the 1990s and stored at the London Transport Museum Depot in Acton. Refurbishment completed in 2008 added new lighting, customer information screens and more CCTV cameras. The 1980s lifts are being replaced one at a time, work that started in 2023 and will continue until 2024. A second exit, no longer in use, leads from the platforms to the back of the lift shaft. London buses serve the station with day and night routes.
