Bellister Castle

Bellister Castle stands in Northumberland, a castellated 19th-century mansion joined to the ruins of a 14th-century tower house. It sits on a mound that may once have held an early motte and bailey castle. A moated hall house probably stood here in the 13th century before a large tower was added in the 14th century. The Blenkinsop family owned the site until 1697, when they sold it to new owners who enlarged it into a three-storey house around 1699. Architect John Dobson gave the property its present castellated east front in 1826. The castle has passed through many hands since the Blenkinsops left. Serious fires in 1901 led to further changes in 1905, while the older parts were left to decay. The National Trust received the castle as a gift in 1976 and now maintains the scheduled ancient monument and Grade I listed building. Although the house remains a private residence, visitors can view it from public footpaths through the surrounding woods. The ruins include sections of the 14th-century tower and parts of the later mansion. The landscape around Bellister links to Hadrian’s Wall, a short distance away. The site’s layered history shows traces of medieval defence, Tudor occupation and Victorian grandeur. The contrast between the restored mansion and the crumbling tower offers a clear picture of how such places evolved across centuries.
