Lavells Lake

Lavells Lake is a 12.5-hectare local nature reserve on the edge of Woodley, a suburb of Reading in Berkshire. It sits within Dinton Pastures Country Park and was once an active gravel pit. The lake opened to the public in 1979 after fourteen years of extraction work. Wokingham District Council owns the site, while management is shared with the Friends of Lavell’s Lake. Several bird hides overlook the water, giving visitors sheltered views of the wildlife. The reserve was officially declared a local nature reserve in 1992. The site supports a wide range of animals, including twelve mammal species. Bats such as the soprano pipistrelle and Daubenton’s bat fly over the lake at dusk. Red foxes and roe deer move quietly through the margins, while smaller creatures like weasels and wood mice keep to the undergrowth. Amphibians thrive here too, with great crested newts and common toads breeding in the damp areas. Grass snakes and smooth newts add to the reserve’s variety of reptiles and amphibians. Visitors find a mosaic of habitats around the water’s edge. Trees like silver birch and blackthorn frame the lake, while plants such as Himalayan balsam and cow parsley colour the banks. Reed beds of common reed and stands of elecampane add texture to the landscape. The bird hides provide quiet spots to watch waterfowl and passing migrants. Paths wind through the reserve, linking open water, woodland and meadow areas for easy exploration.
