Carnedd gron Darren Fawr

Carnedd gron Darren Fawr is a round cairn in the Rhondda Cynon Taf county, near the community of Cwm-bach. The site dates from the late Stone Age into the early Bronze Age and sits on a hilltop at grid reference SO033024. Its purpose was likely tied to burial rituals and religious ceremonies of the time. Round cairns differ from ring cairns, which have a different structure and function. The builders of this cairn also constructed chambered tombs, burial mounds, stone circles, hillforts and standing stones. Cadw, the historic environment service of Wales, has registered the cairn and assigned it the unique SAM number GM287. The monument is protected under Welsh heritage law. Such cairns are part of a wider Neolithic and Bronze Age landscape across the region. They provide insight into the burial practices and spiritual beliefs of ancient communities. Visitors reach the site by following paths up Darren Fawr hill. The cairn itself is a low, grass-covered mound of stones, about 12 metres wide. From the hilltop there are wide views over the valleys and hills of Rhondda Cynon Taf. The surrounding area is open moorland with heather and bracken. The site is quiet and remote, offering a sense of the past without modern distractions.
