Bethel, Abernant

Bethel Chapel stands in the village of Abernant, set in the Aberdare Valley in south Wales. Built in 1862, it replaced an earlier schoolroom and became a centre for local Baptist worship. The chapel sits beside the River Cynon, where processions once marched from Aberdare to mark its opening. The chapel owes much to Thomas Price, a leading Baptist minister who helped establish it. In 1862, over 160 members moved from Calfaria to strengthen Bethel. Price also organised open-air baptisms in the river, drawing large crowds to watch hymn-singing processions. Inside, the chapel seats 750 people, reflecting its importance in the 19th century. A baptismal well was added in 1867, ending river baptisms. Though membership has declined, the building remains a quiet witness to the area’s religious and social history.
