Schloss Poppenreuth

Schloss Poppenreuth stands in Poppenreuth, a village that now belongs to Waldershof in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria. The remains of the old estate are protected as a listed monument and as an archaeological site. Hans Notthafft of Weißenstein founded the place in the 16th century after he acquired a farmstead there. The estate passed through several hands after a fire in 1766 destroyed the main building. Records show the rebuilding of the farm wings cost 2,616 gulden by 1767. In 1882 the property was sold at auction and later owned by Gustav von Siegle before Fritz von Gemmingen-Hornberg took it over. The site includes a former Catholic chapel built in 1717. Visitors today see two surviving wings of the old farm complex with tiled roofs and timber-framed upper storeys. The chapel, once the castle chapel, now serves as a Catholic youth centre. Its granite doorway and three-sided chancel date from the early 18th century. The quiet village setting and the modest remains still recall the estate’s former importance.
