Amtsplatz 2 (Bregenz)
The house at Amtsplatz 2 stands in Bregenz’s upper town, a quiet square lined with historic buildings. Built in the late 19th century, it began life as a mill before becoming a bakery and later a tavern. Traces of the old city wall from the 13th to 16th centuries remain inside its walls. The two-storey building has a steep roof and wide gable, with sandstone frames around the ground-floor windows. A carved keystone from around 1800 shows a pretzel, a reminder of its tavern days. Today it serves as a private home, protected as part of Austria’s cultural heritage. Visitors notice the neat façade and the way the roof folds sharply over the upper floor. Inside, fragments of the medieval wall can still be seen. The quiet square around it offers views over the town and lake below.
