The Hendre

The Hendre stands in the Monmouthshire countryside, six and a half kilometres north-west of Monmouth. It is the only full-scale Victorian country house in the county, built in the Victorian Gothic style by three architects over three stages in the 19th century. The house began as an 18th-century shooting box before the Rolls family enlarged it into a grand mansion. The gardens and park were designed by Henry Ernest Milner in the late 19th century. Today it serves as the clubhouse for the Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club. The house is linked to Charles Rolls, the motoring and aviation pioneer who co-founded Rolls-Royce. Charles was born and raised at The Hendre, where the Duke and Duchess of York stayed in 1900. The Rolls family rose from modest beginnings through strategic marriages, accumulating land and wealth over centuries. Their social rise culminated in a baronetcy and later a peerage for John Allan Rolls. The estate passed through different branches of the family until it was sold in 1984. Visitors find a Grade II* listed mansion with a great hall, billiard room, smoking room and cedar library. The coach house and stables remain from the final building phase. The surrounding landscape park, also Grade II* listed, offers long views across the Welsh borders. Inside, the rooms reflect the Gothic style and the family’s changing fortunes. The golf club’s presence ensures the house remains a living part of the community.
