Pfarrkirche Chorherren

The Catholic parish church of St Ägidius stands on rising ground at the south-eastern entrance to Chorherrn, a village in the municipality of Tulbing in Lower Austria. The Roman Catholic church is dedicated to Saint Giles and belongs to the Tulln deanery in the Diocese of St Pölten. It has been listed as a protected monument since the 20th century. The church began as a vicariate of Tulln in the 14th century and became a parish in 1393. After damage in the first Turkish war of 1529, it was rebuilt in 1568. The sacristy was added in 1783–84, and war again struck in 1683 during the second Turkish campaign. Repairs followed in 1796 and after the Third and Fifth Coalition wars in 1805 and 1809. The choir was vaulted in 1831 and the nave lengthened in 1834, while the tower was shortened and re-roofed in 1910. The former fortified church is enclosed by a cemetery wall with buttresses. The plain nave has simple baroquestyle corniced windows and a Gothic doorway with stone jambs. The low, recessed choir ends in a straight wall containing traces of a Romanesque round-arched window. A massive Gothic tower with pointed louvres and remnants of tracery rises at the north-eastern corner and carries a pyramid roof from 1910. Inside, the high altar of about 1700 holds relics and a tabernacle topped by figures of the Lamb of God and Christ. The organ was built by Franz Reusch in 1874.
