Sandys Row Synagogue

Sandys Row Synagogue stands on a quiet corner in Spitalfields, a few steps from Middlesex Street. Built in 1766 by French Huguenot refugees as a church, it later became a Baptist chapel before a Jewish congregation bought it in 1867. Historic England listed the building in 1987, and today it is the oldest surviving Ashkenazi synagogue in London. After the Great Synagogue was destroyed in 1941, Sandys Row took its place as the city’s oldest Ashkenazi house of worship. The synagogue’s history reflects the waves of migration that shaped the East End, from Huguenots to working-class Jewish immigrants. In 2009, English Heritage funded a major roof restoration, preserving the building for future generations. The synagogue’s interior was remodelled in the 19th century by architect Nathan S. Joseph, who adapted the former church for Jewish worship. The entrance was moved to face Sandys Row, while the Torah Ark was placed on the southeast wall to align with Jerusalem. The Georgian-style interior features a coved ceiling, mahogany Torah Ark, and original pine pews. The women’s gallery runs along three walls, a common feature in historic synagogues. Solomon drew inspiration from the Great Synagogue of London, creating a space that remains largely unchanged since the 1800s. The building’s design reflects both its religious purpose and the community’s needs. Visitors to Sandys Row find a calm, historic interior with a strong sense of continuity. The synagogue hosts weekday afternoon prayers and Sabbath services every other week, as well as festivals and guided tours. Its location in Spitalfields makes it the last remaining Jewish place of worship in the area. The building’s Huguenot roof, restored in 2010, adds to its architectural significance. A plan to develop a heritage centre celebrating East End Jewish history was once considered, though not yet realised. The synagogue also appeared in the 2006 short film *The Tenth Man*, starring Warren Mitchell and Steven Berkoff.
