Oakleigh Way

Oakleigh Way is a Local Nature Reserve in Mitcham, within the London Borough of Merton. It covers 0.64 hectares and holds Grade II status for nature conservation. The reserve borders Oakleigh Way Recreation Ground and is managed by Merton Council. It was once a railway depot with sidings, now transformed into birch woodland. Areas of scrub and grassland also remain. Wildflowers such as weld, zigzag clover and thyme-leaved sandwort grow here. The site’s history as a railway area adds an industrial layer to its natural value. Birch trees now dominate the woodland canopy, while smaller plants thrive in the open grassland. The reserve supports a variety of wildlife, from insects to birds. Its small size makes it easy to explore in a short visit. Access is from Bennett’s Close, a quiet residential street. Visitors find a peaceful green space with footpaths winding through birch trees. The woodland floor shows patches of wildflowers in season. Open grassland areas offer spots to sit or walk. The reserve feels quiet despite being close to urban Mitcham. It provides a quick escape into nature without leaving the city.
