Schloss Monaise

Schloss Monaise stands beside the Mosel in Trier’s Euren district. Built between 1779 and 1783 by François Ignace Mangin, it served as a summer home for Philipp Franz Wilderich Nepomuk von Walderdorf, later Prince-Bishop of Speyer. The early-Classical villa was designed as a pleasure palace with grand reception rooms on the first floor and a plainer upper storey for servants. A broad terrace and sweeping staircase lead down to a park that once stretched across what is now partly covered by industrial land. The estate’s original rural setting has been reduced by modern development, yet the main building survives in remarkable condition. After the French Revolution the house changed hands repeatedly and fell into decay after the Second World War. A thorough restoration between 1992 and 1997 returned the building to use. Today it houses a restaurant, while the adjoining manor farm has become a riding centre run by the Trier Post Sports Club. The park still contains a small garden pavilion, the Monopteros, which was restored in 2021. Visitors find a symmetrical early-Classical façade framed by tall windows and a pediment bearing the Walderdorf coat of arms. Inside, the restored reception rooms display delicate stucco and original parquet floors. Steps lead from the terrace to lawns and gravel paths that once connected to the village of Niederkirch, now gone. The Monopteros stands at the edge of the park, offering a quiet spot beside the old carriage drive. From the terrace there are views across the Mosel valley toward the city of Trier.
