Roscheider Hof Open Air Museum

The Freilichtmuseum Roscheider Hof is an open-air museum near Konz, between the Saar and Mosel rivers. It sits eight kilometres west of Trier and thirty kilometres east of Luxembourg. The museum covers twenty-two hectares of grounds and includes historical buildings, gardens and a village reconstruction. The estate’s core is a rectangular courtyard with buildings dating back to the early sixteenth century. First mentioned in 1330, the Roscheider Hof was once an agricultural property owned by St. Matthias Benedictine monastery. The museum is run by a registered association founded in 1973 and supported by over a thousand members. Its collections include 4,000 square metres of folklore exhibitions on winegrowing, dentistry and forestry. There is also a tin figure and toy museum, a rose garden, country gardens and a nature-oriented playground. Special events such as activity days, guided tours and a Christmas market in Advent attract visitors throughout the year. Visitors find the Hunsrück village and a Moselle village under reconstruction, both showing traditional rural life. A restaurant with a beer garden offers refreshments, and the playground provides space for children. The historical exhibition building and the newer forestry museum display everyday objects from past centuries. The estate’s late Gothic window and the stories of Nicholas Valdenaire and his son Victor add layers of history to the visit.
