Burg Ermengerst

Burg Ermengerst stands on a hilltop at 850 metres above sea level, 850 metres south-south-east of Ermengerst church near Wiggensbach in the Allgäu uplands. The site once commanded wide views over the valley below. In 1037 it appears in records as the home of a ministerialis family serving the Abbey of Kempten. Later it became the seat of the Ermengerst marshals, a knightly office. In 1288 a knight from Ermengerst helped capture the nearby Iberg fortress. The castle itself has vanished without trace, leaving no walls or foundations to explore. Only the hilltop location and old written mentions remain. The site is now a quiet wooded ridge where walkers pass through beech and spruce. A single boundary stone marks the former boundary of the estate. The air is filled with the scent of pine and the sound of wind in the branches. Visitors walk a forest path that climbs gently to the ridge. From the highest point they can still imagine the old outlook across the valley. The silence is broken only by birdsong and the occasional call of a jay. The place feels remote, yet it lies close to the village. It offers a moment of calm and a glimpse of medieval history without any ruins to distract the eye.
