Burgstall

The Burgstall Greut marks the remains of a vanished hilltop castle on Schlossberg, a 731-metre rise east of the Hochgreut farm and north of Haid, a village within Wessobrunn in Upper Bavaria. The site once belonged to the local Greuter family of nobles, whose name appears in 14th-century records and again in the street called Schlossbergstraße. By the 16th century locals spoke of Greut simply as an ‘old castle site’, and fragments still stood in the 18th century. A legend once claimed an underground passage once linked the castle tower to the grey duke’s church at Wessobrunn monastery, used until the mid-15th century. Archaeologists have recorded a protected monument on the same hill that matches the written descriptions. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Conservation classifies it as a medieval castle site without closer dating. Visitors can still trace low ramparts and earthworks in the relief of the ground. Few other finds lie nearby, so experts think this earthwork is most likely what remains of the Greuter stronghold. A quiet woodland path leads up the gentle slope to the summit where the outlines of walls and ditches appear in the turf. The view stretches across the rolling foothills of the Alps on clear days. The site offers little more than grassy lumps and shallow trenches, yet it quietly holds the memory of the Greuters and their vanished fortress.
