Burgstall bei Burgstall (Wessobrunn)

The Burgstall near Burgstall is the remains of a medieval hilltop fortification perched on a ridge at 780 metres above sea level. It stands about 200 metres north-east of the small hamlet of Burgstall, itself part of the Forst district in Wessobrunn. The site occupies a strategic spur that once commanded wide views over the surrounding countryside. Archaeologists recognise the earthworks as the last traces of a high-medieval castle built in the 12th or 13th century. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Conservation lists the site as a protected archaeological monument, numbered D-1-8132-0019. Only a low, grass-covered mound survives today, offering little more than a sense of the original layout. Visitors reach the spot along quiet farm tracks and footpaths that lead from the hamlet. The mound itself is unmarked, blending into the meadowland, yet it provides a quiet place to stand and imagine the vanished walls. From the ridge there are long views across the rolling foothills of the Alps. The absence of modern intrusions lets the landscape speak for itself.
