Cultural heritage D-1-7737-0266 in Erding

Schloss Altenerding once stood in the village of Altenerding, now part of Erding in Upper Bavaria. It began as a Carolingian royal estate called Ardeoingas, first recorded in 788 when Duke Tassilo III was deposed. The estate passed to Salzburg’s cathedral chapter in 891 before becoming a smaller court seat under Salzburg’s rule. The site gained new owners in the late 15th century when the Counts of Haag bought it for 3,297 Rhine guilders. After passing to Johann Jakob Fugger, the castle was destroyed in the Thirty Years’ War and never rebuilt. Its stones were later used by Adam von Puech to build Erding’s Capuchin monastery. Today only traces remain beneath the surface, protected as a scheduled monument. The area still shows the curve of the Sempt river where the original settlement grew. Visitors walk over ground that once held a royal estate, a medieval court and a later manor house, all now vanished but still recognised in the landscape.
