Bryn Derwen Motte

Bryn Derwen Motte is a medieval earthwork castle in Llandysul, Powys, set on a grassy mound surrounded by a low bank. It stands on a quiet hillside near the modern road, its simple shape rising just a few metres above the fields. The site dates from between 1000 and 1153, built in the early years of Norman influence in Wales. The motte is one of the largest groups of such earthworks in Britain, concentrated along the Welsh Marches. Cadw recognises it as a scheduled ancient monument, numbered MG054, protecting its remains for future study. These mounds were once wooden towers or lookouts, used to control the borderlands between England and Wales. Visitors reach the site along a farm track and climb the low mound to see the wide views over the valley. The earthworks are small but well preserved, showing the original ditch and bank that once defended the tower. The surrounding farmland stretches away, giving a sense of how the site once commanded the landscape.
