Beinn Edra

Beinn Edra is a mountain peak on the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Highlands. It stands in the northern part of the island, rising above moorland and lochs. The mountain reaches a height of 541 metres and is surrounded by rugged terrain. Its Gaelic name means ‘hill of the rough ridge’, reflecting the wild landscape. Beinn Edra is classified as a Graham, a type of hill defined by height and prominence. It also appears in the list of HuMPs, hills with a topographic prominence of at least 100 metres. The mountain is recognised by hillwalkers and mountaineers for its accessibility and views. It is often climbed as part of a longer ridge walk or as a standalone ascent. The slopes are gentle enough for experienced walkers, though the weather can change quickly. The summit offers wide views over northern Skye and the Inner Hebrides. On clear days, the peaks of the Cuillin range are visible to the south. A visitor to Beinn Edra follows paths that lead through heather and bog. The climb begins near the shores of Loch Langavat or from the Quiraing area. The final section to the summit is straightforward, with no technical scrambling required. The surrounding landscape includes small lochans and rocky outcrops. The mountain’s isolation makes it a quiet place, ideal for those seeking solitude in the Highlands.
