Baca Ruadh

Baca Ruadh is a mountain top on the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Highlands. It stands in a rugged landscape of moorland and lochans near the village of Sligachan. The peak reaches a modest height but holds a recognised place in Scottish hill lists. Local walking groups often include it in their routes across the Red Cuillin range. Its name comes from the Gaelic for ‘red pass’, describing the colour of the rocks in certain lights. The hill is classified as a Graham Top of Graham, a HuMP and a Simm, showing how hill-walkers measure its shape and prominence. Its grid reference places it close to the main path up the Red Cuillins, making it a common detour for climbers. The surrounding area is rich in smaller tops and ridges that add to the day’s interest. Views from the summit stretch over Skye’s lochs and distant mountains. Visitors find a narrow ridge leading to the summit where a small cairn marks the highest point. The walk involves rough ground and some scrambling near the top. From the summit there are wide views of the Red Cuillins and the Inner Hebrides. The route often starts from the Sligachan Hotel car park where walkers gather before dawn. The return can be made along the same ridge or by dropping into Coire Lagan for a longer circuit. The mountain’s modest height rewards effort with a fine sense of space and solitude.
