King George VI Memorial Chapel

The King George VI Memorial Chapel stands on the north side of St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. It is a small chantry chapel built between the Rutland Chapel and the north choir. The chapel was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth II in 1962 and completed in 1969. It was designed by George Pace in a twentieth-century Gothic style. The exterior is built from Clipsham stone, matching the older parts of the castle. Inside, the altar bears a bronze relief of George VI by Sir William Reid Dick. The chapel holds the remains of five members of the royal family. King George VI was moved here in 1969, followed by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 2002. Princess Margaret’s ashes were placed beside her parents in 2002. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were interred beneath the chapel in 2022. The chapel also contains a memorial chamber beneath the floor for future burials. Visitors find a quiet chapel with simple floor slabs marking the tombs. The stained-glass windows are by John Piper and Patrick Reyntiens, with red and blue tones. Wrought iron gates carry lines from Minnie Louise Haskins’s poem. The roof is painted black and white with gold leaf decoration. The chapel’s design continues the perpendicular Gothic style of St George’s Chapel but in a modern form.
