Friedhof Molln

The cemetery in Molln is a rectangular plot measuring about 75 by 62 metres, enclosed by a stone wall. It stands in the village’s Schulstraße, directly opposite the primary and secondary schools. The site lies roughly 100 metres west of Molln parish church and its adjoining vicarage. It was created in 1806 after Emperor Joseph II ordered separate burial grounds outside churchyards. The old graves around the church were removed and shops built on the land; traces of these stalls can still be seen on the narrow side of the house once used by shoemaker Anton Lintner, which later became the nucleus of the Dachstein shoe factory. In 1965 the cemetery was enlarged southwards by a 75-by-25-metre section, where a large wooden cross was erected, made by the workshop of Klothilde Rauch in Altmünster. Visitors enter through the main gate in the north-east corner. Inside, rows of gravestones line the central path leading to the newer southern section. The older part retains simple iron crosses and modest slabs from the early 19th century. The atmosphere is quiet, shaded by mature trees along the western wall.
