Richmond Rugby Club

Richmond Rugby Club stands in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It is one of England’s oldest football clubs, founded in 1861. The club has played a part in rugby and football history, hosting the first floodlit match in 1878 and appearing in the inaugural match at Twickenham Stadium in 1909. Today it fields men’s and women’s teams, with the men’s first team competing in the second tier of English rugby. The women’s first team plays in the Women’s Championship. The club’s roots run deep in both codes of football. The club’s history includes a bold but short-lived professional era in the late 1990s. After financial difficulties led to administration, the professional team merged into London Irish. The amateur club was revived in 2000 and rebuilt from the bottom of the pyramid. Under coaches like Andy Maren and Brett Taylor, Richmond climbed through the leagues with remarkable consistency. Former internationals such as Bobby Skinstad and Sebastian Berti later joined the club, adding experience to the squad. The youth section has produced players who went on to represent England at various levels. The Athletic Ground in Richmond serves as the club’s home. The ground sits beside Royal Mid Surrey Golf Club and near other sports facilities. Two main pitches lie at the centre, with a concrete stand on one side containing changing rooms, a shop and bars. Behind the stand is a disused cricket pavilion with additional changing facilities. The site also includes smaller pitches and the remnants of a driving range. The atmosphere reflects the club’s long tradition, where history and modern rugby meet on the same ground.
