Cultural heritage D-2-7340-0236 in Weng (Isar)

The remains of Hörmannsdorf Castle stand beside the church of St Barbara in what is now a hamlet of Weng, Lower Bavaria. The site is marked on official lists as a medieval and early-modern earthwork where a moated castle once rose. A 1710 engraving by Michael Wening shows a three-storey building with an eastern tower, encircled by a wide moat crossed by a wooden bridge. Outside the water defences a few farm buildings clustered around the entrance. The castle belonged to the Hörmannsdorf family from the 13th century. By the 15th century they held three nearby estates: Weng, Hinzlbach and Hörmannsdorf itself. In 1657 Dominikus Franz Trainer of Hörmannsdorf appears as a ducal councillor and treasurer at Landshut. A later owner, Johann Urban Trainer, controlled Hörmannsdorf and Moosberg. In the 19th century the estate passed to Theodor von Hallberg-Broich, who died there in 1862. By 1900 the castle had been demolished and its moat filled in. Today the field shows only a low rise where the tower once stood. The church of St Barbara remains, its graveyard stretching towards the vanished moat. Visitors walk a farm track that follows the old bridge approach, while the farm buildings survive as private homes. The site is quiet, with views across open fields to the wooded horizon.
