Moy Castle

Moy Castle stands on the Isle of Mull in Argyll and Bute, a ruined tower house near Lochbuie. It was built by the Maclean family in the 15th century, starting with John Maclean, the third laird, and completed by his son Hector. The castle passed briefly to Clan Campbell before returning to Maclean hands. By the mid-18th century it was abandoned when a new house was built nearby. The site is now protected as a scheduled monument. The castle is a three-storey tower with a garret, its stonework mostly from the early 1400s. Some 16th-century alterations remain visible, and the walls stand almost complete up to the gables. A well survives on the ground floor, and the upper level still shows parts of the crenellated parapet and two cap-houses. Between 2006 and 2015 stabilisation work was carried out, with further conservation continuing since 2020. Visitors find a striking ruin with intact walls and gables rising above the landscape. The barmkin enclosure lies on the south-east side, and the castle’s well remains in place. The setting overlooks Lochbuie, framed by the island’s hills. It appeared in the 1945 film I Know Where I’m Going!, linking history with cinema. The site offers a quiet place to walk among the remains of a once-living stronghold.
