All Saints Church, Thornton Hough

All Saints Church stands in Raby Road, Thornton Hough, a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral. It is an active Anglican parish church designed in the Geometrical style with a cruciform plan. Built in 1867–68 by John Kirk and Sons, it replaced an earlier structure on the same site. The church is constructed from rock-faced red sandstone with lighter stone dressings and a slate roof. Its southwest tower rises to 37 metres with a broach spire and five clock faces, including one higher on the south side. A Lombard frieze runs along the sides, and buttresses support the walls. The church is worth visiting for its architectural detail and historical significance. It was funded entirely by Joseph Hirst, a woollen mill owner from Huddersfield, who also paid for the vicarage, school, and school house nearby. The total cost of the church, excluding land, was about £8,500, equivalent to a substantial sum today. The consecration in 1868 was performed by the Bishop of Chester, the Rt Revd William Jacobson. In the early 20th century, a vestry was added by Jonathan Simpson, expanding the church’s facilities. Inside, the church features a Caen stone font and reredos by T. Ruddock, both decorated with biblical scenes. The stained glass includes work by Clayton and Bell, H. G. Hiller, and Powell’s, with windows commemorating Saint Michael. The original pipe organ by Gray and Davison was replaced in 1912 by a two-manual organ by Norman and Beard. A Gothic monument in the south transept honours Joseph Hirst, who died in 1874. The church’s interior blends Gothic ornament with Victorian craftsmanship, offering a quiet space for reflection.
