Christ Church, Higher Bebington

Christ Church stands in Higher Bebington on King’s Road, an active Anglican parish church built between 1857 and 1859 to designs by Walter Scott. The foundation stone was laid in August 1857 and the church was consecrated on Christmas Eve 1859 by the Bishop of Chester. A northwest steeple was added in the 1880s but the spire’s tip was lost in 1980. The building is recorded on the National Heritage List as a Grade II listed structure. Sandstone from Storeton quarry and slate roofs form its exterior, with 13th‑century style details throughout. Inside, six‑bay arcades rise on alternate round and octagonal monolith piers beneath scissor‑braced roofs. The chancel screen of 1912 is carved with tracery, cherubs and vines, and the stone pulpit carries similar motifs. The font stands on angel corbels and its panels bear carved symbols. Stained glass includes a west window of 1862 by R. B. Edmundson and a 1951 Nativity window by T. F. Wilford replacing a war‑lost original. A three‑manual organ built in 1936 by Rushworth and Dreaper occupies the north loft. Outside, paired lancets line the aisles and trefoil clerestory windows light the nave. The chancel’s east window is four‑light with Geometric tracery, flanked by lancets below a gabled entrance. The tower shows angle buttresses, a shingled broach spire and a fossilised Chirotherium footprint set into the porch wall. The vestry and organ loft add further lancets and plate tracery, completing a coherent 13th‑century revival composition.
