Granatspitze Group

The Granatspitze Group is a subgroup of the Central Alps within the Eastern Alps. It lies in the High Tauern range, bordered by the Felbertauernstraße to the west. The group stretches across Salzburg and Tyrol, though it often receives less attention than its neighbours. Its highest peak is the Großer Muntanitz at 3,232 metres. The range takes its name from the Granatspitze, which stands at 3,086 metres. To the north it meets the Kitzbühel Alps, while the Glockner Group lies to the east. The Granatspitze Group is home to more than a dozen named three-thousand-metre summits. Among them are the Kleiner Muntanitz at 3,192 metres and the Stubacher Sonnblick at 3,088 metres. The Luckenkogel reaches 3,100 metres, and the Vordere and Hintere Kendlspitze both top 3,085 metres. The Kalser Bärenkopf stands at 3,079 metres, while the Gradötz reaches 3,063 metres. These peaks form a rugged skyline above the surrounding valleys. Walkers and climbers find routes that lead through high alpine terrain and past glaciers. The paths offer views of the neighbouring Glockner Group and Venediger Group. The Granatspitze itself provides a challenging ascent with panoramic rewards. Lower slopes support alpine meadows and sparse pine forests. The contrast between the rocky summits and the green valleys below is striking. The group’s remoteness keeps visitor numbers low, preserving a sense of wilderness.
