Großer Muntanitz

The Grosser Muntanitz stands 3,232 metres above sea level in the Granatspitz range of the Hohe Tauern in Tirol. It rises about nine kilometres north-west of Kals in Osttirol, forming the highest point of the entire Granatspitz group. The Sudetendeutsche Hütte at 2,656 metres serves as the usual starting point for the normal route. From there the Karl-Schöttner-Weg leads upwards through grassy slopes and a sandy cirque before reaching the Wellachköpfe ridges. The final sections include a short exposed passage secured by cables before the summit ridge is gained. The climb is graded as relatively straightforward when snow-free and dry, yet it still demands careful route-finding and a head for heights. After passing the Kleiner Muntanitz at 3,192 metres the route descends a steep, rope-assisted gully on the western flank. A short horizontal traverse on steel cables follows, requiring secure footing and freedom from vertigo. The path then crosses the flat Kampl saddle at 3,129 metres between two small glaciers before ascending the easy scree slope to the summit. From the top visitors look east towards the Grossglockner and west to the Venediger group. The panorama stretches across the Granatspitz peaks and the surrounding Tauern valleys. The Sudetendeutsche Hütte offers overnight accommodation for those who wish to break the ascent into two days. The route is marked throughout with cairns and occasional painted signs, though navigation skills remain essential above the hut.
