Well Hung Lover

Banksy’s ‘Well Hung Lover’ is a stencilled graffiti mural on a wall in Frogmore Street, Bristol. The artwork shows a naked man hanging from a window ledge by one arm, while a suited man and a woman in underwear look out beside him. It was painted in 2006 on the side of a building that once housed a sexual health clinic. The scene suggests the suited man is searching for his suspected lover below. The mural stands about five metres above street level, making it best viewed from Park Street bridge. Its creation involved scaffolding covered with tarpaulin to keep the work secret during painting. The mural became Bristol’s first legal street art after public support forced the City Council to change its stance. A 2006 online poll found 97 per cent of respondents wanted it kept, overriding initial opposition. Banksy reportedly found humour in the irony that his artwork appeared on a clinic wall without his knowledge. In 2020, the mural was incorporated into the Bristol Festival of Light, with projections by local artists Jasmine Thompson, Inkie, Parys Gardener and Zoe Power. Despite two acts of vandalism in 2009 and 2018, the artwork remains protected and publicly visible. Visitors to Frogmore Street can see the mural from the pavement or from Park Street bridge above. Some paint splatters from the 2009 vandalism remain visible on the wall. The building itself has since been sold, but a covenant ensures the mural stays in place and publicly accessible. The surrounding area includes shops and cafes, making it easy to combine a visit with a walk through central Bristol. The mural’s bold imagery and local history continue to draw attention from passers-by and street art fans alike.
