Portree High School

Portree High School stands on the Isle of Skye in the Highlands of Scotland. It is a state co-educational comprehensive school serving pupils from across Skye and Raasay. The school draws students from eleven primary schools in the area. On site, The Elgin Hostel provides accommodation for pupils whose homes are far away. Since 2018, Tony Breen has led the school as Headteacher. The school organises its work into eleven departments covering various subjects. The school has a long history dating back to the 17th century. A school existed in Portree until 1825, when it closed temporarily. New buildings were constructed in the 19th century, and by 1905 it became a Higher Grade school. The Elgin Hostel opened in 1933 and is now a listed building. In 2008, a new school building replaced older structures, removing temporary classrooms. The current school building opened officially in 2010. Visitors find a modern school building with facilities for Broad General Education and senior courses. The curriculum includes Gaelic medium education and vocational subjects. Partnerships with West Highland College and Sabhal Mòr Ostaig offer Foundation Apprenticeships. The school’s alumni include notable figures such as Sir Russell Johnston and Sorley Maclean. The surrounding area of Portree provides views of Skye’s landscapes and coastal scenery.
