Sound of Raasay

The Sound of Raasay is a narrow sea channel between the island of Raasay and the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Highlands. It forms part of a key maritime route used by ferries connecting the Inner and Outer Hebrides. Vessels heading from Kyle of Lochalsh to Stornoway avoid the shallow Caolas Sgalpaigh at the southern entrance by passing through the Sound instead. This stretch of water is one of the narrowest channels in Scotland, with just 400 metres separating Clachan on Raasay from Dun an Aisling on Skye. The passage is also a recognised shortcut for ships using the Inner Sound route to the Caledonian Canal. Its tight confines make it a notable feature for mariners navigating the region. Visitors to the area can enjoy views across the Sound from several points on both islands. The short crossing offers glimpses of Raasay’s rugged coastline and Skye’s distant Cuillin peaks. The channel’s swift tidal streams and changing weather add to the drama of the scene.
