Suleymaniye Mosque

The Suleymaniye Mosque stands on Kingsland Road in Haggerston, London, within the Borough of Hackney. It is a Sunni mosque built to serve the Turkish-speaking community and Muslims in the area. Construction began in 1994 and was completed in October 1999. Funded by the UK Turkish Islamic Cultural Centre, it covers 8,000 square metres and can hold 3,000 worshippers. The mosque includes a conference and wedding hall, classrooms, funeral services and student accommodation. Its Ottoman-style design features a 66-metre minaret, the tallest in the United Kingdom. The mosque serves as a local landmark and one of London’s key Islamic centres. Prince Charles visited in 2001, marking its significance beyond the community. The building reflects both religious and cultural ties between the UK and Turkey. Inside, visitors find a spacious prayer hall with traditional Ottoman architecture. The conference and wedding hall hosts community events and gatherings. Classrooms support religious education, while funeral services are provided on site. Student accommodation caters to those attending Marathon School nearby. The mosque’s towering minaret dominates the skyline, reinforcing its presence as a local landmark.
