Hoxton Hall

Hoxton Hall stands in the Hoxton district of Shoreditch, within the London Borough of Hackney. Built in 1863 as MacDonald’s Music Hall, it is a Grade II* listed building and one of the few remaining unrestored saloon-style music halls. The interior features an iron-railed, two-tier galleried auditorium rising on three sides, supported by cast iron columns above a small, high stage. For many years it served as a Quaker meeting house before becoming a community centre and performance space. The building survives largely in its original form, offering a rare glimpse of 19th-century theatre design. Its history reflects shifts from entertainment to social and religious use. The hall is notable for its role in community and artistic life. In 1879, William Isaac Palmer bought it for the Blue Ribbon Gospel Temperance Mission, and later it passed to the Bedford Institute, a Quaker organisation. Lisa Goldman invited artist Leo Asemota to create site-specific work for *Hoxton Story* in 2005. Robert Newman filmed *A History of Oil* there, blending stand-up comedy with geopolitical commentary. Welsh singer Duffy performed an intimate gig in 2026 with just fifty fans. These events show how the space continues to host creative and thought-provoking performances. Visitors find a historic theatre with original features preserved. The two-tier gallery wraps around three sides of the auditorium, supported by cast iron columns. The small, high stage remains unchanged from its music hall days. The hall now functions as both a community centre and a performance venue. Its walls hold layers of social history, from temperance missions to modern art installations. The atmosphere blends the weight of the past with the energy of current events.
