Waldschule Alpl

The Waldschule Alpl sits in the small village of Alpl, part of Krieglach in the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district of Styria. Built as a rural schoolhouse, it now serves as a museum preserving local heritage. The building itself is protected as a listed monument. Peter Rosegger, the Styrian poet and writer, launched a fundraising campaign in 1902 to build the school and slow the flight from the countryside. After closing in 1975 due to lack of pupils, the house was fully restored and turned into a museum in 1982 by Bertl Petrei. Original classrooms and the Rosegger Room remain intact. The school also houses the Austrian Hiking Museum. Visitors walk through the preserved schoolrooms and the writer’s memorial space. The Austrian Hiking Museum displays exhibits on walking culture across the country. The surrounding village and alpine landscape add to the quiet, reflective atmosphere of the visit.
