Teufelstein
The Teufelstein stands 1,498 metres above sea level in the Fischbacher Alps of Styria, its summit the highest point within Fischbach’s municipal boundary. Dense spruce and pine forests cover most of the lower slopes, giving way to open rock near the top. Three massive sandstone blocks, each about six metres tall, form the Devil’s Stone itself, stacked one upon another like a precarious tower. Local legend claims the fallen angel Lucifer tried to build a stairway to heaven here before being cast down again. Geologists explain the formation as the remains of harder rock that resisted weathering while softer layers around it wore away. Several well-marked paths lead to the summit, ranging from short forest tracks to longer ridge walks. The quickest route starts at the Schanzsattel road junction and takes roughly an hour to reach the rocks. A gentler, more scenic approach begins at the Alpl Waldschule, passing the Kluppeneggerhof where the writer Peter Rosegger was born. From there the trail follows the Lendkreuz and the long-distance trail 06B, taking between three and three and a half hours to climb. In winter the same slopes become a quiet realm for snowshoe hikers, their gentle gradients ideal for the sport. At the top the three great slabs form a natural platform offering wide views across the surrounding Mittelgebirge. Visitors stand on the uneven rock and look down into valleys that stretch towards Graz and the Mürz valley. The contrast between dark forest and pale sandstone catches the light at dawn and dusk. On clear days the peaks of the Hochschwab massif appear on the northern horizon. The silence is broken only by the wind in the pines and the occasional call of a raven circling overhead.
