Aberystwyth Arts Centre

Aberystwyth Arts Centre stands on the Penglais campus of Aberystwyth University in west Wales. It is one of the largest arts venues in the country, with a theatre, concert hall, studio theatre, cinema and four galleries. The site also includes cafés, bars and shops for visitors. The buildings were designed by architects Dale Owen and Peter Roberts, both of whose work has won RIBA awards. The Great Hall opened in 1970 and the theatre followed two years later. The Hugh Owen Building and the bell tower have also received architectural recognition. The centre has built its reputation through ambitious programming and strong partnerships. Early managers such as Roger Tomlinson and Ken Williams introduced productions featuring actors like Pete Postlethwaite and Julie Walters. Alan Hewson, director from 1984 to 2013, created twelve new festivals including Musicfest and the International Ceramics Festival. These events draw artists and audiences from across the UK and abroad. The centre’s community arts programme and commercial operations help fund its artistic work. Visitors find a lively programme of performances, exhibitions and festivals throughout the year. The galleries host changing shows, while the concert hall and theatre present music, drama and film. The cinema screens independent and classic films, and the studios support creative learning. Cafés and shops provide places to meet. After refurbishment following damage and the pandemic, the buildings reopened in 2021. The Great Hall and the Hugh Owen Building are now listed for their architectural importance.
