Cadogan Square

Cadogan Square is a quiet residential square in Knightsbridge, London. It sits between Pont Street, Lennox Gardens and Sloane Street, surrounded by red-brick houses converted into flats. The garden in the centre is private, open only to residents. Milner Street leaves from the west side, and the whole area forms part of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The square is one of the most expensive streets in the United Kingdom. In 2013 the average house price stood at about £5.75 million, making it the third most expensive street in the country. The freeholder is the Earl Cadogan, whose family has owned the land for several hundred years. Film stars Christopher Lee and Boris Karloff once lived here, as did animator Ray Harryhausen and writer Lord Dunsany in the 1920s. American socialite Barbara Daly Baekeland was murdered in her flat here in 1972. Visitors notice the Flemish-influenced brickwork on the west side, designed by William Young in 1877. Number 61 is an early example of high-class mansion flats, and number 61A was once a studio-house. Sussex House School occupies number 68, a building by Norman Shaw. Several buildings, including numbers 4, 52, 62 and 68, are Grade II* listed, while Stuart House at 84 is Grade II listed. The square remains a discreet, leafy enclave close to Sloane Street’s shops and restaurants.
