Hampton Pool

Hampton Pool is a heated open-air swimming pool in Hampton, within the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It sits beside the River Thames, offering a rare chance to swim outdoors every day of the year. The main pool measures 36 by 14 metres, while a smaller 12-by-7-metre pool is set aside for children. A gym, fitness studio and cafeteria share the site, providing extra activities for visitors. The pool is run by the Hampton Pool Trust, a registered charity, with day-to-day management handled by YMCA St Paul’s Group. The pool opened in 1922 after plans from 1914 were delayed by the First World War. In 1939 a diving pit and filtration system were added to improve safety and water quality. Further upgrades in 1961 widened the pool and added a new building and car park. By 1980 financial pressures led the council to propose closure, but a local campaign raised over £60,000 and reopened the pool in 1985. The trust and its supporters continue to organise summer concerts to help fund the pool. Visitors find a welcoming outdoor space framed by trees and the riverside path. The main pool is long enough for lane swimming, while the children’s pool offers a safe place for younger swimmers. The gym and studio attract those who want to combine a swim with fitness work. The cafeteria provides light meals and drinks, making it easy to spend a whole day by the water. The pool’s year-round warmth and community atmosphere draw regulars from across London.
