St Mary's Church, Hampton

St Mary’s Parish Church stands at the junction of the A308 and A311 on Bell Hill in Hampton, marking the ancient heart of the village. The site may once have held a Romano-British chapel, and records show a church here since 1342. Before that, services could have been held under the ancient yew tree that stood in the churchyard until 1829. The first recorded building was made of flint and stone, with galleries on three sides and a three-decker pulpit. Henry VIII ordered repairs, adding a brick nave and south aisle while keeping the old chancel and tower. In 1671 a new brick tower replaced the unsafe original, with Charles II contributing £350. The present building replaced the old one after it closed in 1829. The new church was completed by 1831, with Prince William, Duke of Clarence, laying the foundation stone. Princess Adelaide and other royals attended the consecration, and carriages lined the roads for the event. The church’s interior has evolved over time, with box pews removed in 1885 and the chancel added in 1887 to mark Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. The east window, designed by Heaton, Butler and Bayne, is inspired by the Te Deum, and the north and south chancel windows depict the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis. Visitors find stained-glass windows by Eric Fraser, including depictions of the Annunciation and the four Archangels. A striking mural by his son, Rev Geoffrey Fraser, adorns the west wall, showing local history figures and church members from 1952–53. The churchyard holds notable tombs, including a Grade II listed pyramidal tomb for John Greg and his wife. Other graves belong to Huntington Shaw, who designed ornamental ironwork at Hampton Court Palace, and Samuel Lapidge, assistant to Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. The church remains a place of worship and remembrance, with later additions like a small chapel and floodlighting.
