Wolf Rock Lighthouse

Wolf Rock Lighthouse stands on a small granite skerry eight nautical miles southwest of Land’s End. The rock, known in Cornish as An Welv meaning ‘the lip’, rises from the sea between the Cornish mainland and the Isles of Scilly. Its fissures once howled in gales, giving the place its English name. The tower itself is built from Cornish granite prepared at Penzance and rises 41 metres above the waves. It was completed in 1869 after eight years of work despite fierce weather and treacherous seas. The light can be seen from Land’s End both day and night. The lighthouse is notable for several engineering firsts. It was the first in the world to be fitted with a helipad, allowing safe access in all conditions. The lantern, shown at the Paris Exhibition of 1867, used curved glass and helical glazing bars to improve performance. Its optic displayed alternating red and white flashes every fifteen seconds, carefully balanced so both colours carried equal intensity. Trinity House engineer James Walker designed the tower, and his resident engineer James Douglass oversaw the dangerous construction. Earlier attempts to mark the rock had failed, including an iron daymark topped with a wolf effigy that was soon washed away. Visitors approaching by helicopter or boat see the granite tower rising directly from the tiny rock. The original lantern storey still crowns the structure, its glass panels catching the light. Beside the tower stands a surviving iron-and-concrete beacon built by James Walker in 1848, now a silent witness to earlier failures. The surrounding sea is deep and fast, and the rock itself is a rare plug of ancient lava unlike mainland Cornish stone. The lighthouse remains automated, its beam guiding vessels along one of the busiest shipping routes in the south-west.
